Chimo Equipment Ltd. was established in 1973, at that time, a need for better instrumentation on exploration drilling rigs was identified. Most measurement at the time was accomplished through pneumatic devices. Activity in oil and gas exploration was increasing dramatically and the need for more accurate and effective information became evident. Chimo entered the market with electronic instrumentation that could record drilling fluid volumes, return flow, and pump strokes. This equipment allowed the driller to have more information directly in front of him along with the feature of audible alarms and permanent charts. Within ten years "Chimo" became the leading provider of electronic instrumentation in Canada. In 1984 they released a Surface Mud System that integrated many features previously provided by two instruments. It was the Watchdog 1010 and still is one of the most reliable and trouble-free systems available. The Watchdog 1010 was also the first in Canada to be certified as Intrinsically Safe for use on the rig floor. With it's ease of use and operation over extreme temperature ranges - it allowed "Chimo" to become the primary supplier of instrumentation to the drilling rigs. Chimo has evolved into an information provider with networked computer systems on the drilling rig measuring over 50 parameters (and growing) plus Daily Drilling Reports, Kill Sheets, Morning Reports, and a host of other features. In addition we are establishing a centrally located information hub, accessible through the Internet where data sent from the rig computer system will be available to the Operator's and Contractor's offices no matter where they are in the world. Chimo designs and manufactures it's own equipment to withstand the brutal environment on a drilling rig and operate in temperatures of minus 40°C (-40°F) to plus 40°C (104°F). The equipment operates from the bitter cold of the Arctic to the hot humid temperatures of the Gulf of Mexico to the dry heat of the Middle East. With a dedicated staff in electronics research and development, and software development "Chimo" continues to stay in the forefront of providing advanced electronics and superior customer service. In 1997, Peak Energy Services Ltd. purchased Chimo Equipment Ltd. In March 2001, Varco International acquired Chimo Equipment Ltd. Varco's acquisition of Chimo expands our range of drilling instrumentation technology. Varco manufactures and supplies drilling equipment and rig instrumentation, oilfield tubular inspections and internal coating techniques, solids control systems and services, and coiled tubing and pressure control equipment for both land and offshore drilling operations.
